How do you calculate 3D printing cost?
Real print cost is more than the spool price. Volume, infill, electricity, machine wear, operator time, and scrap must be added together. ARMAĞAN 3D totals these from the volume measured in your STL, OBJ, or 3MF file.
Five cost lines
- Material. Volume × density × infill/shell ratio gives grams; grams × price per kg is filament or resin cost.
- Electricity. Printer kW × hours × your tariff. Home and commercial rates differ — use your bill.
- Machine depreciation. Purchase, maintenance, and consumables spread over lifetime hours. You can turn this off or apply a percent.
- Labor. Slicing, bed prep, watching the print, and support cleanup are a per-part flat amount.
- Waste, margin, and VAT. Failed prints, profit, and optional VAT become the customer quote.
A small example
A ~48 cm³ PLA part at shell + 20% infill is often 25–30 g. Labor, scrap, and margin move the quote far more than filament alone.
FDM vs resin
FDM can drop infill; resin prints the solid volume and writes supports as waste. Switching printer type changes materials and default scrap.
